I was born and raised in Miami, FL to immigrant Cuban family. I am the youngest of 5 children and my love for fishing began as soon as I could hold a rod. My father was the person who introduced fishing to me. Whether we were bass fishing in our neighborhood lakes or fishing out of our 20 ft seacraft, my dad always had time to take me fishing. Our time together was brief, he passed away when I was fourteen. But it is because of him and because of our relationship that my love for fishing exists.
Through mutual friends of my family, I was befriended by a man named Isidro Huerta. Unbeknownst to me, Isidro would become a much needed role model and father figure in my life. He is the person who introduced me to sight fishing on the flats. I caught my first big bonefish and tarpon on fly on my 15th birthday with he and legendary guide Eddie Wightman. I was hooked.
From there I joined a local fishing club in south Florida called Tropical Anglers. It was here that I was lucky enough to meet some of the greatest light tackle anglers in the business. Rob Hammer, Bill Lindsey and Rinny Cairo were instrumental in showing me the ropes. Norman Jansik and Al Pflueger always pushed me beyond my limits. Norman instilled passion and drive, while I have to thank Al for sharing his incredible knowledge and commitment to the sport. In 1994 a life long dream became reality when I won the coveted Master Angler Award. I repeated the feat again in 1996, becoming one of a select few anglers to ever repeat this victory.
In the year 2000, with the help of friends Rick Murphy and Rob Fordyce, I began my own guiding business. Over 200 days a year, I fish the waters of Biscayne Bay through the Florida Keys for tarpon, bonefish, permit, snook, redfish, shark, cobia and trout. |
